The Star Sailors

About a year ago, I discovered some illustrations that my mother created in the early 2000s. These illustrations were intended for a children's book and consist of a sequence in three parts. They depict me at the age of five, getting dressed and becoming some sort of space hero.

Since I became a parent this year, the illustrations have taken on a different meaning for me. In The Star Sailors, I am exploring the story of this space hero that my mother began. Through hand-colored photo collages, we follow a spacefaring pilot searching for his child, the space-hero my mother illustrated. Along the way, the pilot and the child encounter various characters, creatures, and phenomena in this fictional world. The Star Sailors is as much about parenthood as it is about reconnecting with one's inner child.

Ongoing project from 2023. Puppets by Alexander Brandels and costume by Mona Brandels.
